The Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805; 'Victory' breaking the line (?)
This drawing appears to be a detail looking roughly south within the Franco-Spanish Combined Fleet at Trafalgar. Nelson's 'Victory', which is possibly the fourth ship from the right, is shown coming in to cut through the enemy line at the start of the action followed by the rest of the British weather division. However the division is only very lightly indicated in the background. If this is correct, the two smaller ships on the left, close to the viewer, are probably French or Spanish frigates. Such vessels did not engage in line actions with larger ships but hung off to repeat signals and only engaged in fighting with opposing vessels of similar strength. Based on the dimensions and title of this drawing it is probably no. 92 in the NMM Pocock exhib. (1975). Although the statement that this drawing appears to relate most closely to Pocock's final paintings of the action is questionable on several grounds.
