A ship lying to in a heavy sea, after van de Velde
This drawing appears to be a study after, or at least in the manner of, van de Velde the Younger. NMM BHC0901 is a closely related van de Velde oil painting in terms of composition, but Pocock could also have been copying a related van de Velde drawing, such as NMM PAE5280 which is very similar to this. He is known to have owned drawings by Dutch 17th-century marine artists and the Museum has two by Reinier Nooms (called Zeeman) which appear to have belonged to him. Several works by van de Velde the Younger were owned by Pocock’s contemporaries, which he would have known, indicating that there was no lack of source material for professionally well-connected artists.
