Two-Decker in a gale off shore

Medium includes graphite; heightened with white. This is a fine early 19th-century wash drawing but it does not look like Pocock in terms of technique and if the inscription lower right is intended as an artist signature it is certainly false. The artist is more likely to be Samuel Owen (1768/9 -1857), of whom relatively little is known but who was influenced by both Bonington and Turner. Compare, for example, Christie's 'Important Maritime Art' sale, London 31 October 2007, lot 67, a watercolour of Dutch merchantmen and other shipping in a fresh breeze, 12 x 9 1/4 ins. PvdM 7/07]
