Thermometers
Box of thermometers. Inside box is a note which reads "The thermometer A6 was this day taken out and packed up for transmission to the International Metre Commission. 1873 April 4. W. Ellis". This object consists of a wooden box with a key in the lock. In ink on the outside of the lid reads "B 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10" inside are thermometers B1-B10 each labelled as such and in a hole made for that thermometer. Each thermometer is circa 520mm in length with a glass ball of mercury at the bottom and a scale engraved in red onto the glass of 0-180 (no units mentioned) with every degree marked and every 5 labelled (5 labelled one side of the scale, 10 labelled the other). Each thermometer has a paper label attached to it with string reading B1, B2 etc. B3 has A4 crossed out on the label. B2 has A5 crossed out on the label. B1 has A7 crossed out on the label.
