On board the coastal minelayer Plover (1937) under way during a minelaying exercise in Stokes Bay, The Solent. The photographer is on the starboard side of the upper (minelaying) deck looking forward showing two exercise ground mines being handled. The mines are numbered 16 and 18 and are marked '44 day clocks A (WBNS) 5.62'. The seamen are stripped to the waist.
