An officer, possibly Nelson, dictating despatches before the Battle of Trafalgar
The officer shown appears to have lost his lower right arm and is therefore almost certainly intended as Nelson. However, the history behind the received title is not recorded and, assuming the date given is about right, the subject might more probably be Nelson sealing his offer of truce to the Danes at Copenhagen in 1801. The action shown is certainly that of sealing a document (the seal stamp being indicated by two divergent lines in the standing figure's left hand) rather than dictating. Nelson is reported as sealing the the truce offer on the rudder-head of the 'Elephant' (Foley's ship into which he moved for the battle), which would have been below deck and plausibly might be the casing shown rather than a table.
