'One mile from Souhag 4 March. 1854. 4.P.M.'
This simple study of a traditional Egyptian cargo vessel was taken on Edward Lear’s second journey to Egypt in 1854. The lateen-rigged ship is portrayed as if standing on a narrow stretch of land in the foreground above it with the boat’s bow extending beyond the image to the right. Great attention is paid to the vessel’s cargo. At the top of the page are Egyptian figure studies.
