On board the Royal Research Ship Discovery (1962) moored in the Upper Pool off Hays Wharf, London. The photographer is on the port bridge wing looking forward and down onto the forecastle deck showing the diesel-hydraulic crane situated between the goal post legs of the foremast. To port of the crane is the single-barrelled electrically driven winch for lowering heavy items of equipment to take core samples of the seabed.
