The photographer is looking from the promenade deck on the starboard side aft showing two ten-oared lifeboats under tow of a motor lifeboat heading for the start. The racing boats are using eight oars double banked and all oars are tossed. The boats have a mixed crew of seamen in uniform at the bow and stern of each boat and the oars people are passengers wearing a variety of paper hats. Orient Line house flags on a marker buoys are in the background.
