On board the Royal Navy Type 81 general purpose frigate Tartar (1960) while at sea off Barbados during exercises involving the 7th and 8th Frigate Squadrons. The Tartar is a unit of the 8th Frigate Squadron (West Indies). The photographer is on the starboard side of the quarterdeck at the stern looking forward and to port showing the 4.5 inch gun mount trained fore and aft with one of its sighting panels open. The gun's crew are wearing their anti-flash protection waiting for action stations to be sounded. In the foreground are three practice shells and eight cartridge cases and one of the gun's crew is holding a practice shell.
