The Tartar is a unit of the 8th Frigate Squadron (West Indies). The photographer is on the starboard side of the quarterdeck just abaft the hangar looking aft and slightly to port showing the 4.5 inch gun mount trained to port. The gun's crew are wearing their anti-flash protection at action stations and the gun has just been fired. An ejected cartridge case is hitting the deck. One of the crew is holding a practice shell and three are each holding a cartridge case. Other practice shells and cartridge cases are stood on the deck. The officer of the gun holding binoculars is on the right.
