'Regatta HMS Vincent 1898 a dispute'

Photograph of clinker-built ships' boats and men during a regatta off the training ship HMS St Vincent, 1898. A starboard quarter view of a whaler, with 6 men on board, coming alongside another boat which has 7 men on board. 3 oars can be seen and the man sitting on the starboard side towards the stern of the boat in the centre is reaching across to the boat on the right. At the stern of the boat in the centre is a helmsman at the rudder which has yoke and ropes attached. A man is standing at the stern of a third boat in conversation with the two crews. In the background in the distance to the left a building can be seen, which is probably the RN Hospital Haslar.

The photograph was taken by Kenneth Hurlstone Jones who was appointed to HMS St Vincent on 12 April 1898 and remained there until being appointed to HMS Repulse on 7 September 1898. The photograph must have been taken at some point in these 4 months and 26 days. The original negative envelope stated: 'Regatta HMS Vincent 1898 a dispute'.
