'P. Scott raising the dredger Canton River, Hong Kong'
A slightly distant view of Hong Kong harbour. The upturned hull of the dredger Canton River, partly obscured by the barge (No.16) along side, can be seen in the middle distance. Off the dreger's other side is a lift steam crane, a mooring barge and a destroyer, possibly HMS Hardy (1895). Shipping and small boats are in the background and foreground.
The original negative envelope was labelled: 'P. Scott raising the dredger Canton River, H.K. 1901'. 'P.Scott' refers to Admiral Sir Percy Scott, who was in command of HMS Terrible during the Boxer Rebellion and oversaw the turning of the dredger between 2 and 18 January 1901. It was later raised in early March 1901.
