'Raising Dredger, Hong Kong January 1901'
A blurred photograph of the work undertaken to right the capsized dredger Canton River. The upturned hull can be seen in the water, partially obscured by the port bow of the destroyer HMS Hardy (1895), which was used to pump air into the hull to displace the water and make the dredger lighter.
In the background on the right is the neoclassical Queen's Building, completed in 1897 and, on the left, part of the Hong Kong Club building, completed the same year.
The original negative envelope was labelled: 'Raising Dredger, H.K. 1901'. Sir Percy Scott oversaw the righting of the dredger between 2 and 18 January 1901. It was finally raised in early March 1901.
