'Inscribed Rock, 6 February 1901'

A view of a large boulder resting on other rocks, under which is a large gap, on Sacred Hill at Ma Tao Chung, above Kowloon Bay.

The original negative envelope was labelled: 'Inscribed rock Kowloon, 6.2.01[.] Beneath this rock last Sung Emperor slept & died whilst flying from Kublai Khan 1287 A.D'.

The last Song dynasty emperor was the seven year old Zhao Bing (Xiangxing) who took his own life, possibly forced to, with Lu Xiufu, his military commander, by jumping from a cliff after their defeat at the naval battle of Yamen on 19 March 1279 against a Mongul force. The battle took place near Hong Kong. The rock was inscribed by locals with 'Sung Wong Toi' (meaning 'Terrace of the Sung Kings') in memory of the last of the Song dynasty.
