HMS Engadine at Mudros Bay, Lemnos in the North Agean Sea, 1918
HMS ‘Engadine’ was a seaplane carrier that served in the Royal Navy during the First World War. She was converted from a cross-channel steamer in 1914 and initially carried three seaplanes. Modified in 1915 with the addition of a permanent, four-aircraft hangar, she then served with the Grand Fleet until 1917. At the Battle of Jutland in 1916, she took the stricken HMS ‘Warrior’ in tow and saved 600 lives when that ship sank. Little is known about the artist Fred Jay Girling (1900-82), who has shown ‘Engadine’ after she had been transferred to the Mediterranean Fleet in 1918. Whilst there, she was based out of Malta and spent the remainder of the war conducting anti-submarine patrols.
