Backboard
Part of ZBA4848. An oval wooden backboard, inscribed in pencil ‘Rear Admiral Fowke’. It was originally mounted in a wooden frame (ZBA4848.2) with a silhouette portrait of a gentleman (see ZBA4848) and a printed trade label reading ‘Profiles in Miniature by Mrs Beetham, No. 27, Fleet Street, 1785’ (see ZBA4848.1). Isabella Beetham (née Robinson) was a leading producer of silhouettes in late eighteenth-century London. The date ‘1785’ on the label refers to the date at which she moved to No. 27 Fleet Street and does not necessarily indicate the date of the portrait. Beetham used this trade label throughout the late 1780s and early 1790s. The silhouette mounted with this backboard is believed to represent the naval officer George Fowke. For more information, please see ZBA4848. (Updated April 2019.)
