The Westland Wasp HAS.1 helicopter XT421 coded 503 taking off from a Royal Navy frigate off Portland.
A starboard side view of the Westland Wasp HAS.1 helicopter XT421, coded 503, of 829 Naval Air Squadron HQ flight, taking off from a Type 12 frigate in the English Channel off Portland. The machine is fitted with a Nord AS.12 wire guided missile to starboard and a missile holder to port and her tail boom is out of the picture. The photographer is looking up from the forward end of the flight deck. The ship is said to be the Leander class frigate Jupiter (1967) but this is not possible as the Jupiter was at her builder's yard on the Clyde throughout June and July, sailed under the Red Ensign for Portsmouth on 6 August, was handed over by her builders on 9 August and commissioned at Portsmouth 13 August 1969.
