On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while on a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is on the centreline of 01 deck abaft the Asroc launcher looking to port showing an highline transfer chair on deck waiting for an officer who is about to be transferred to the destroyer James C Owens (1944) which is in the background. The transfer crew are dressed in red overalls and are wearing life jackets. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment.
