On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while under way approaching Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia. The photographer is looking forward from the starboard side of 01 deck showing the single 5 inch D.P. gun mount and men in whites manning the forecastle. Their headgear shows they are from different nationalities. The ship is following astern of two others. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment. In the distance are United States Navy aircraft carriers with the nuclear powered Enterprise (1960), hull number 65, on the left.
