On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while berthing in Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia. The photographer is looking forward and slightly to starboard from the port side of the forecastle abreast the single 5 inch D.P. gun mount showing men in whites completing the berthing under the direction of a Royal Navy lieutenant. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment. To starboard is the amphibious warfare helicopter landing ship Guam (1964), hull number LPH 9.
