On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while on a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is on the port side of 01 deck abreast the Asroc launcher looking aft showing some of the crew waiting to carry out an highline transfer evolution with the destroyer James C Owens (1944) which is approaching from astern. The transfer crew are dressed in red overalls and are wearing life jackets and Lieutenant Robert D'Alessio USN, wearing white overalls, is in charge of the detail. An unidentified officer is in the foreground. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment.
