On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while on a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is on the port side of 01 deck amidships just forward of the Asroc launcher looking aft and to port showing an officer clutching a case in the highline chair midway between the ships during the transfer evolution with the destroyer James C Owens (1944) which is close to port. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment. Only the afterpart of the James C Owens (1944), hull number 776, is in the picture, from the aft funnel to the aft twin 5 inch gun mount.
