On board the guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while under way on a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is at the forward end of 01 deck on the port side looking forward showing the 5 inch D.P. gun mount and the forecastle. The jackstaff is hinged down flat on the deck. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment. Ahead of the Ricketts is the navy oiler Caloosahatchee (1945) refuelling the destroyer Lowry (1944) to port and the guided missile destroyer Barney (1960) to starboard.
