On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) coming alongside a berth in Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia. The photographer is on the centreline of 01 deck abaft the forward 5 inch D.P. gun mount looking forward and to starboard showing enlisted men standing near the jackstaff. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment. The guided missile destroyer leader Richmond K Turner (1963) is berthed port side to the jetty in the background. She has bunting strung along the length of her 1 deck guardrails and a welcome home sign is above her bridge. Only her forepart from the foremast forward is in the picture. A large number of people and motor cars are on the quay in the background.
