The photographer is at the forward end of 01 deck on the starboard side looking forward and to port showing the 5 inch D.P. gun mount and the forecastle. Some of the crew wearing red overalls and life jackets are on the forecastle abreast the gun in readiness for a refuelling. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment. Ahead of the Ricketts is the navy oiler Caloosahatchee (1945), hull number 98, refuelling the destroyer Lowry (1944), hull number 770, to port and the guided missile destroyer Barney (1960), hull number 6, to starboard.
