On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) while refuelling from the oiler Caloosahatchee (1945) during a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is on the upper bridge at 03 deck level looking forward, to port and down showing two men with radio microphones and wearing combat helmets on 01 deck near the fuel hose connection. Two men wearing caps and two men in hard hats are also on 01 deck while another three men are on the forecastle holding a line across to the oiler. These men are all in red overalls and life jackets. An officer in white overalls is overseeing the proceedings. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment.
