On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) during a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is on the starboard side of 1 deck abaft the boat stowage looking forward. The gasoline gig is not in its davits. The officer in the foreground is Commander Thomas E Fortson USN, the officer in command, and next to him is the senior officer of the Italian contingent. They are both looking to starboard at the guided missile frigate Dewey (1958) which is on a reciprocal course and only her stern is in the picture. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment.
