On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) during a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is on the port side of the upper bridge at 03 deck level looking down, to port and slightly aft showing Commander Thomas E Fortson USN, the officer in command, in conversation with other officers on the port bridge wing. Next to him is a black American senior enlisted man wearing a radio microphone and a German rating. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment.
