The crew are wearing life jackets but the passengers, who are about to disembark, are not. The ship's davits are in the lowered position. Commander Thoms E Fortson USN, officer in command, is on deck watching proceedings. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment.
