On board the United States Navy guided missile destroyer Claude V Ricketts (1960) refuelling from the oiler Caloosahatchee (1945) during a voyage from Kiel to Norfolk, Virginia. The photographer is on the port side of the upper bridge at 03 deck level looking down, to port and forward showing Commander Thomas E Fortson USN, the officer in command, on the port bridge wing watching the refuelling. Next to him is a black American senior enlisted man wearing a radio microphone and a German rating. The Ricketts' crew consisted of 10 officers and 164 crew from the US Navy with the rest of the complement being from West Germany, Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Turkey as a mixed manning experiment. The bow of the oiler can be seen on the left.
