'D-Day June 6th 11 00 hrs - Coming ashore LCT'
A study made on D-Day, inscribed 'D-Day June 6th 11 00 hrs' at top left and 'Coming ashore LCT' at bottom centre, with the pre-printed page number 34 of the notebook from which the sheet comes at bottom right. The view looks down the length on the LCT from the bow doors, with troops seated in the bottom of the craft or standing on structural stringer beams along the sides looking out over the gunwales. The wider viewpoint is seaward, with transport ships of the invasion fleet beyond. The impression that the LCT has a funnel with a red band is misleading: they were diesel-driven and this one has a central mast on the bridge with a red flag or metal-sheet marker hoisted to its left, flanked left and right by two quick-firing anti-aircraft guns in at-rest positions. This, with a flag floating on a buoy in the sea to the left, the cheerful smile of a tin-hatted figure who is probably the bow-master at lower right, the fact that the men on the sides are looking at the view not sheltering below, and the absence of any sign of conflict, give the drawing an air of (no doubt transient) relaxation.
