'Jig Beach'
A study made in Normandy on D-Day-plus-1, 1944, inscribed at the bottom 'JIG BEACH', with the date June 7th at bottom left and the pre-printed page number 38 of the notebook from which the sheet comes at bottom right. Jig Beach was the Le Hamel to Asnelles sector of Gold Beach, the main British landing area centring on Arromanches. Men of the 6th Green Howards came ashore there supported by DD (amphibious) tanks of the 4th/7th Dragoons and the special tanks of the Westminster Dragoons. German coastal defences in Jig sector were weak and their positions easily knocked out before the troops pushed inland against stiffer resistance, especially round Le Hamel. The view shown reflects the rapidly established beachhead, with many ships off shore, men working to organize the beach, two British soldiers (one smoking), lower right, in a German trench and a medical post marked by red-cross flags, presumably in adjacent German bunkers.
