'ML282' rescuing men during the Zeebrugge Raid, 23 April 1918
This drawing shows the Elco motor launch, ML 282 (1915), in the entrance channel to the Bruges Canal on the 23 April 1918, rescuing the crews of the blockships 'Iphigenia' and 'Intrepid' during Zeebrugge Raid. Shellfire is in progress with fragments falling into the water. The commander of ML 282, Lieutenant Percy Thompson Dean RNVR, was awarded the Victoria Cross for this action and his second-in-command, Lieutenant James Courtenay Wright RNVR, received the Distinguished Service Cross. A ladder bucket dredger is shown alongside the Zeebrugge Mole on the left. The drawing previously had the title 'Dover in the dark days' (possibly written on the back) though the reason is uncertain. It is in an unusual style for Wyllie, of stylized heavy ink line over pencil.
