Loss of HMS 'Aboukir', 'Hogue' and 'Cressy' in the Broad Fourteens action of 22 September 1914
The right half of an image of which PAD9941 is the other part (see that one for full details). It shows the armoured cruiser 'Hogue' listing to starboard after being hit by two torpedoes from the German submarine U-9 (Comander Otto Weddigen) while stopped to rescue the survivors of her sister 'Aboukir', whose upturned hull can be seen in the foreground. The third ship present from the 7th Cruiser Squadron was the 'Cressy' and she was torpedoed by U-9 shortly after the Hogue and sank within fifteen minutes. This is a very finished drawing in two parts, possibly intended for illustration in print but, if so, where and when it appeared remains to be identifed.
