An Italian battleship of the 'Re Umberto' class, with (above) a small sketch of a sailing vessel
A drawing of an Italian battleship: either the 'Re Umberto' (1888), completed 1893; 'Sicilia' (1891), completed 1895, or 'Sardegna' (1890), completed 1895. All survived the First World War and, though out of commission, into the 1920s. Whichever it is it is shown in the "Victorian" colours which these ships wore until about 1904, with black hull and ochre upper works, and apparently firing a salute here which suggests Wyllie may have seen the vessel during a review or some other courtesy visit, presumably to Britain. The sketch at top right shows a small three-masted ship approaching under topsails only in calm conditions.
