A half-length portrait of a portly Royal Naval officer in uniform turned to viewer's right, with his hans tucked in his jacket pockets.The rings on the sleeve combined with the braid on the cap peak and the sketch of a rear-admiral's flag top right (a St George's red cross with two red balls in the hoist) suggest the rank of this otherwise unidentified sitter.
