The monitor 'Marshal Ney' under tow off a dockyard setting, probably in the Medway
A watercolour study of two black naval tugs, with ochre funnels, manoeuvring a British monitor with a massive tripod mast. The ship is the 'Marshal Ney' (1915), and the location probably the Medway in 1918-19. This monitor's 15-inch gun turret was removed in February 1916 on the Tyne and by 1918 she had a uniform armament of six 6-inch guns. The hull appears very foreshortened and is probably seen in starboard quarter view, with an anchor hanging vertically at the bow.
