Tourist boats on the River Ganges by the landing place for a ghat at Benares, India. They are wooden rowing boats with a midship cabin and the number of passengers carried on chairs on top of the cabin varies with each boat.. The photographer is on shore looking at the boats waiting to embark their passengers. Two of the boats already have passengers on board but at least seven other boats are empty. The type of chair carried on the cabin roofs of the boats are a random mix of woven cane garden chairs and wooden lounge style chairs, with and without arms and with various styles of back.
