Sketches of Kaiser Wilhelm II on board his yacht 'Meteor' in the Queen's Cup race at Cowes, 1893
original art: drawing. Two figure studies on one sheet, inscribed by the artist, who was one of the Kaiser's guests on 'Meteor' during the Queen's Cup race - which he won - at Cowes Regatta in 1893. The main drawing notes 'Rough sea', 'Dark Sky' and identfies the 'German Emperor / All in white' sitting on the deck on a cushion or a bag with the name 'METEOR' on it and with a note relating to his left wrist: 'Watch on wrist strap and / a gold bangle'. (Wyllie, in his and M.F. Wren's book 'Sea Fights of the Great War', p.4, specifically records that the Kaiser was 'dressed all in white, with a gold bangle on his wrist' on this occasion: see also PAE0971.) His right hand grasps the low guard rail as he looks at the watch (which may be a stopwatch, since wristwatches in the modern sense did not exist at the time). The small figure sketch at upper left is just to correct the pose, with the note 'More like this'. [PvdM 6/13]
