The photographer is looking north-north-east showing the south breakwater in the foreground with a caique under shortened sail approaching the harbour entrance. A steam tug, caiques and a 2-masted schooner are in the harbour. The Akropoli Kavala is on the hilltop on the right of the picture. This town is variously spelt Kavalla, Kavala and Cavala.
