A starboard broadside view of a Sinhalese oruwa outrigger canoe being brought ashore near Colombo, Ceylon. Three men are lifting it in stages up the beach. The boat has a dugout hull with sewn bulwarks and a single outrigger on the starboard side. The starboard side of the single sail is fastened to a bamboo pole mast and the bow and the port side is fastened top and bottom to a form of sprit, commonly known as as an Oceanic spritsail rig. The boat is steered by an oar fixed to the port quarter. Palm trees line the sandy beach which also has large rock outcrops on it.
