Diamond Rock off Martinique in the West Indies
Diamond Rock, off the south west corner of Martinique in the West Indies, is a 175-metre-high basalt island located south of "Grande Anse du Diamant" on Martinique. The uninhabited island is about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) from Pointe Diamant. The rock was fortified by the British in December 1803, equipped with three 24 pounder and two 18 pounder cannons and one 24 pounder carronade, manned by a crew of two officers and 120 men and was commissioned as the stone frigate HMS Diamond Rock. The rock dominated French shipping in the St. Lucia Channel until 3 June 1805 when it was surrendered to a superior force, having resisted two French seventy-fours, a frigate, a corvette, a schooner, and eleven gunboats.
