HMS Ark Royal (1950)

No. 1 [Flight] Deck. View across the flight deck from an elevated position just aft of the island, looking towards the port quarter. In the foreground is a raised crash barrier arm, affording a good view of the hydraulic mechanisms that raise and lower it. A crash barrier net has been rigged for testing. Temporary workshops have been erected on the flight deck, and among the piles of miscellaneous equipment is a box marked 'Radioactive Material'.

This is part of a series of photographs taken during the final stages of HMS Ark Royal's last major refit which was completed in 1970. The location references are derived from the deck plans in the latest edition of the ship's NBCD book.
