V Beach at Cape Helles on the Gallipoli peninsula.

V Beach at Cape Helles on the Gallipoli peninsula. The photographer is looking south-west from the ruins of Sedd el Bahr fort showing a distant port bow view of the P. & O. passenger cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929) at anchor offshore. The hulk of the French Navy battleship Massena (1895), which was sunk as a breakwater and is seen from off her starboard beam, is still in position offshore and it is being broken up as lies. In the foreground are a number of local people and some wartime iron and steel wreckage. This is the beach where the Dublin Fusiliers landed from the converted collier River Clyde (1905) on 25 April 1915.
