Passenger cruise ships in the harbour at Hammerfest, Norway.

Two passenger cruise ships in the harbour at Hammerfest, Norway in either 1936 or 1938. The photographer is looking west-north-west across the town showing motor fishing vessels berthed in the inner harbour next to warehouses. The Franconia (1923), seen from well abaft her starboard beam, has stern lines to the shore, her starboard anchor down and she is in all white livery. At anchor in the middle of the harbour and seen from just abaft her port beam, is the Montrose (1922) which made a total of three cruises to Norwegian waters in 1936 and 1938. The northern mountains of Kvalo are in the background. The town of Hammerfest was totally destroyed by German forces in early 1945 and none of the buildings in this photograph survived.
