The east side of the harbour at Hammerfest, Norway.

The east side of the harbour at Hammerfest, Norway. Amongst the buildings is what is reputedly the northernmost church in Norway. The photographer is on board the passenger cruise liner Viceroy of India (1929) and two men in a rowing boat are pulling away in the foreground. The town of Hammerfest was totally destroyed by German forces in early 1945 and none of the buildings in this photograph survived. The horizon is not quite level.
