The harbour and town at Hammerfest, Norway.

The harbour and town at Hammerfest, Norway. The photographer is looking south-west from the north shore of the harbour showing the town nestled under the slope of the Sadlen and on the peninsula. A few motor fishing vessels are moored in the harbour and the steeple of the Parish Church can be seen above the waterfront warehouses. All of the buildings are of wooden construction. The town of Hammerfest was totally destroyed by German forces in early 1945 and none of the buildings in this photograph survived. The island of Sörö is in the background.
