A street scene in Hammerfest, Norway.

A street scene in Hammerfest, Norway. The photographer is looking north-east from near St. Michael's Church showing a large number of locals and tourists and a couple of horse-drawn carts. The nearest building on the left is the Motesalongen, proprietor P. Andersen. Further along the road is a large kiosk. On the right is a clock reading 8.23, a sign for Petterøe's Tobakk and another kiosk. All of the buildings are of wooden construction. The town of Hammerfest was totally destroyed by German forces in early 1945 and none of the buildings in this photograph survived.
