The town and anchorage at Hammerfest, Norway.
The town and anchorage at Hammerfest, Norway. The photographer is looking west from the north end of the Sadlen showing the harbour on the right. A number of motor fishing vessels and other craft are at moorings in the harbour and two of the warehouses fronting the harbour are occupied by Feddersen & Nissen. In the right foreground is a building occupied by M. Gabrielsen. In the centre are the shops of Herreekviperingen, Harald Jensen and C.F. Knobloch. The Parish Church is to the right of centre. All of the buildings are of wooden construction. The town of Hammerfest was totally destroyed by German forces in early 1945 and none of the buildings in this photograph survived. At anchor in the distance and seen from off her port quarter is a Cunard Line passenger cruise ship in white livery, either the Franconia (1923) or the Carinthia(1925). The island of Sörö is in the background.
